I’m sure like myself many of you have had struggles with finding skincare products that help to hydrate, retain moisture and that contain less irritating ingredients. One of my top concerns was finding a skincare product for my body that would leave my skin moisturized for the entire day. For some that may be a bit much to ask, but I was sure that there was something out there for me.
•
I remember getting up early in the mornings to go to work and slathering copious amounts of whatever brand lotion was on my bathroom sink just to come home after a long day to very ashy legs. I could darn near scratch my name into my thighs from the dryness of my skin…embarrassing.
•
I would usually have to take another shower to put some moisture back into my skin or apply more lotion.
•
And trust me I had tried everything at that point…Vaseline, too much lotion, ultra hydrating lotions, thicker skin creams, even a combination of a body oil with lotion on top, but that took time.

It wasn’t until my sister had introduced me to tallow, that I decided to try it out. I didn’t even know what tallow was, but I knew that if my sister was using it that it was definitely something special.
•
At the time she was looking for something natural but also a very good moisturizer for her eczema prone skin. She was also looking into a bunch of homesteading videos where she came across how to render tallow from suet. She received her first batch from a farm in Pennsylvania and rendered it herself at home in her kitchen. She had never rendered tallow before so she learned from YouTube university.

So what is tallow??
•
Tallow is the rendered fat that comes from cattle and sheep. This particular cluster of fat sits around the kidney of the animal and is a harder consistency than the rest of the fat throughout the body.
•
It has been around for thousands of years as a staple in kitchens and has been used for skincare products. It was used in soaps, candles and even as a miracle moisturizing cream. Cheaper than many of the other conventional oils that we use today, tallow is also healthier for you.

•
How come I’ve never heard of it before?
•
People may argue that it was because of a man named Phil Sokolof.
•
After suffering from a heart attack in 1966, he began to lobby against cholesterol and fat in fast foods, targeting McDonald’s specifically. At the time McDonald’s fried their French fries using 93% tallow from cows in order to cut costs.
•
Sokolof’s effects definitely did not go unnoticed and he eventually got the restaurant to stop using beef tallow in 1990.

What what are the Benefits of Using Tallow?
•
Tallow is incredibly effective in improving skin health due to the similar makeup of our skin. Our cell membranes are made up of mostly fatty acids, with at least 50% being saturated fats. Tallow is also made up of about 50% saturated fats, with the remaining amount being monounsaturated, which makes it compatible with our biology and nourishing to our cells.
•
Tallow also provides the following benefits:
•
•Contains high concentrations of fat soluble vitamins A, B1, D, E, & K in a balanced combination
•Grass-fed tallow has four times as much vitamin E compared to tallow from grain-fed cattle
•Promotes collagen development and skin elasticity
•Excellent for assisting cell development and repair
•Improves skin tone, texture, and overall health
•Reverses free radicals and heals skin •Readily absorbed by our skin
•Most similar to our sebum
•Safest for babies and children
•Anti-inflammatory
•Antimicrobial

After the skin relief that my sister found in using tallow for her eczema prone skin, I decided to give it a try. I have to say that I have nothing to complain about when it comes to this ultra nourishing butter.
•
Not only does it keep my skin moisturized for hours, it makes my skin feel silky smooth, and it helps it retain more moisture than it ever has. Frequently washing my hands all the time has depleted my skin of its natural moisture, but when I use tallow I don’t experience that at all.

When it comes to finding a great moisturizer for my skin that delivers on its promise, other skincare brands couldn’t even compare…Tallow is THAT cream
